Casitas in Clay: Hand Building with Red Rock Earth
Join us for a two-part immersive ceramics workshop that taps into the rich tradition of hand building and the grounding beauty of Colorado's red rock clay. In this class, we’ll explore how clay can become a vessel for both personal expression and cultural reverence through the construction of miniature homes—casitas—that reflect sanctuary, imagination, and history.
Throughout the course, students will experiment with foundational handbuilding techniques such as slab building, coiling, and sculpting to bring their own visions of home to life. Drawing inspiration from ancestral architecture and the symbolic importance of dwelling spaces across cultures, participants will be encouraged to blend structural elements with personal storytelling, honoring both legacy and individuality.
Your casita may be whimsical, symbolic, or grounded in a real-life structure—this is your sanctuary, your story, your clay to shape.
Class Schedule:
Day 1: Building the Foundation
Students will be introduced to red rock clay and its characteristics, followed by guided demonstrations in handbuilding methods. You'll shape and sculpt your own casita, working intuitively while receiving individualized instruction to bring architectural and decorative elements to life.
Day 2: Painting and Finishing Touches
Once the clay has been bisque-fired, we’ll reconvene to add surface color and detail. Students will paint their casitas, infusing them with life, texture, and meaning. We'll discuss color symbolism, surface design, and techniques for expressive finishing.
By the end of this workshop, each student will have created a one-of-a-kind ceramic casita—a small but powerful representation of home, memory, and imagination.
This class is open to all levels—no previous clay experience is required. All materials are provided.
