Meet the People of ReCreative Denver: Neyla Heller

As we often say at ReCreative Denver, we would be nothing without our community. Within the greater ReCreative Denver community lies the representation of countless other vital sub-communities, which we’re attempting to create awareness around one at a time. In March we showcased the Women of ReCreative in celebration of International Women’s Day. This month we’re featuring members of Denver’s LGBTQIA+ art community in celebration of Pride.

First up is Neyla Heller (they / them) who told us that their inspiration comes from, “The complexity of human identity,” adding that they, “want to give an image of Queer prosperity and leave space for people (Queer or otherwise) to have emotional experiences openly through their art.”  Neyla often uses plant imagery in an attempt to close the gap that exists between humanity and mother earth.

We would never ridicule a tree or flower for not being good enough, it is there to grow, just like we are.

When asked about personal influences, Neyla pointed to their highly creative mother and grandmother, commenting, “There was no other option for me — from day one I was meant to create and was given the tools to do so.” With time, it was that instinctual sense of creativity that supported them in becoming their authentic self. Like many in the transgender community, Neyla had fear surrounding their gender Queerness but found that drawing trans bodies brought them joy, calm, and ultimately acceptance of their own trans identity.

While Neyla has since found self-love, it took a long time to get there. They noted, “It's important to elevate the voices of the community because, for many trans youth, a lack of support can mean life or death.” (Read that again. Life or death!) It is their aim to de-stigmatize trans bodies through artistic representation, which Neyla hopes will "show trans youth that there is room for them in the world.”

While Neyla currently has many projects in the works, they are not ready to share any glimpses into those pieces at this time.

Stay tuned for upcoming work by giving them a follow on Instagram at @graphic.intent and learn more about Neyla in their recent interview with Voyage Denver.
