How much can you disrupt an image before it becomes something else?
Inspired by the visual distortions in her current Portal Gallery exhibition Mirror Logic, artist Carrie Shiffrin will lead a hands-on collage workshop exploring the space between recognition and abstraction. Starting with a photographic image, participants will experiment with different ways of taking it apart and putting it back together. Impose a grid and rotate, or rearrange the pieces. Remove recognizable elements and replace them with something unexpected. Work with a friend to weave two photographs together or swap sections and see what new image emerges.
The workshop draws on Shiffrin’s own process of using reflection, repetition, fragmentation, and distortion to push familiar images away from immediate understanding while leaving enough intact for us to keep looking and interpreting. Participants will be encouraged to invent their own rules, follow unexpected results, and discover how small changes can transform the way we see an image.
No previous art experience is necessary. Bring a photograph or image you’d like to transform, or choose from images provided at the workshop. All materials and tools are provided, and all experience levels are welcome.
